The Las Palmas de Gran Canaria Murga competition is one of the festivities\u2019 historic contests, with the first edition dating from 1977.<\/p>\n
The Murgas are groups which launch sharp criticism of the various social and political events which have taken place over the year with their songs; they give the fiestas a note of irony and satire on the subject of current affairs. As well as this, the groups are very active participants in the celebrations, present at all the most outstanding events. They\u2019ve spent the whole year rehearsing for the experience of this competition. The entire encounter takes place in the Carnival enclosure in front of packed audiences, and in recent Carnival years, it is spread over three nights of initial heats and one grand finale for the Murga groups with the highest scores.<\/p>\n
