Murga Contest: 4th Round
The Las Palmas de Gran Canaria Murga competition is one of the festivities’ historic contests, with the first edition dating from 1977.
Murgas are groups whose songs criticise social and political events that have taken place in previous months; they add a note of irony and satire about current affairs to the festivities. These groups are also very active participants in the celebrations, present at all the most outstanding events. They’ve spent the whole year rehearsing to experience this competition.
The entire encounter takes place in the Carnival enclosure in front of packed audiences, and in recent Carnival years, it is spread over three nights of initial heats and one grand finale for the Murga groups with the highest scores.
The fourth round of the Murga competition is a nerve-racking night. When the groups have finished performing, the judges deliberate and announce the names of the finalists, who return to the big stage a day later to compete for the prizes in the competition. The specialist judges for the costume prize also announce their decision on this evening.
